#AutismAdventCalendar #DayTwentyFour
Saturday 24th
For our last advent calender day, I challenge you to buy yourself a small Christmas present if you can afford it. If you can’t, you could instead take some time out of the day to do an activity you love.

Today’s is similar to yesterday’s but I want to take it a little further - I challenge you to do anything that is
completely non-Christmas related. Returning to old routines can really help to ground you before all the main changes of Christmas day.

What are your thoughts on Christmas food? There seems to be a pressure to eat certain foods around this time which can be a sensory no-go. Today’s challenge is to eat one of your favourite non-Christmas foods.

Do you love routines but also feel like making them a bit more exciting? Then I encourage you to take today to form a new Christmas tradition - one of my old ones was that I used to go to the hairdressers every Christmas eve! It’s not Christmassy but making it a routine made it feel more relaxed and festive!

Now we return to our challenges. Do you have a comfort TV show? If so, your task today is to watch an episode - even better if it’s a Christmas special!

Today’s post is a little different as I’m looking for a little advice regarding the account. I’m going to post a few questions throughout the day both on Mastadon and on Instagram so any answers or suggestions would be much appreciated. Thank you!

Is there anything that you are worried about with Christmas? That’s perfectly normal - as much as the season is exciting, the change can cause stress. My favourite way of managing my stress is by writing about it, so today’s task is to write down your Christmas worries.

Remember last week, when I encouraged you to research your interests? Well today it’s time to infodump! And - most importantly - do NOT apologise; I love to hear about all my friends’ interests, even if they are not my own.

Over time, I’ve learnt that in order to be accomodated to as a disabled person, I have to express my needs assertively and set boundaries. Therefore, I challenge you to set one if needs be today, or whenever you next are making festive plans with loved ones.

I love a good list and as we learnt yesterday, simple joys are so important, so today I want you to make a list of small things that make you happy!

Neurodivergent folks, is your relationship with your childhood a little bit… rocky? A lot of neurodivergent people have childhood trauma from struggling to understand social rules and from not being accomodated to before diagnosis, whilst infantilising is also a very common form of ableism. However, childlike joy is a beautiful thing so I challenge you to find it today.

Okay, so I must confess I did not get round to doing this face-to-face today, so I’m taking to the Internet to test this social rule… why is small talk seen as so important? In some countries it would be seen as weird if you DID try to make small talk but where I am (UK), deciding not to get into a superficial, pointless discussion makes you at best a bit of a loner, at worst rude and anti-social.

Social rules are so weird sometimes, right? So, today is your day to question them! This can really great way to learn about social rules if they are important or to encourage your communitiy to reflect on those that maybe are not. I look forward to hearing what you have learnt!

We’re halfway through advent already, so as a little reward, today’s task is just to do something that YOU want to do. Maybe there’s an old prompt that you loved and would like to do again, or perhaps you want to come with something original. I can’t wait to see what you all get up to!

With the changes going on this month, it’s very easy to feel disorientated and forget important routines such as self care techniques. So today, I want you to make a list of ways you can look after yourself during this time.

Do you often notice yourself masking your autistic symptoms as a way to fit in, almost subconsciously? When you do it, it can be really draining, so it is important to take breaks for masking. I recommend this every day, but especially today!

Those of you who have an autism and/or ADHD diagnosis, do you remember what it was like when you first got it? I know that above all else, it was a very confusing time and a needed all the support that I was fortunate to get. Today’s challenge is to think about what would you say to your younger self or someone else in a similar situation.
