For many people, their first or only exposure to is it being used as an excuse for bigotry, particularly for speaking, non-intellectually-disabled white men to say racist, sexist, and inter-ableist things.

This may not be representative of the movement as a whole, but it does represent valid concerns with a real issue in the community. It may make some people less willing to engage further with our movement, and we shouldn't push them to. Instead, we need to stop tolerating bigotry.

This requires breaking the dominance of white men in autistic spaces. Since a large part of the root of that problem comes by design from medical diagnosis, accepting self-diagnosis is critical. We need to construct our movement to be specifically , and make it easier for BIPOC, women and people of marginalized genders, nonspeaking and intellectually disabled people, and other marginalized people to participate. We also need to support organizations, efforts, and movements that are specifically for autistic marginalized groups even if we ourselves can't join.

It also requires a re-focusing of our movement toward and instead of putting so much hope into policy. Only the most privileged people have a real chance of getting much done through policy, and relying primarily on this approach comes across as either having a silver spoon or being a believer of the statist lie and ineffective in practice, since it very much is those things. If we want to appeal to more people, we need to meet their needs, not ask the government to do it for us and hope it follows through.

Tl;dr: When the autism rights movement has more visibility in the form of actual, intersectional community work than in the form of bigotry apologetics, we will find that more people have positive impressions of our movement and are willing to support or participate in it.
