I'm wondering…

Is an #autodidact necessarily someone with an innate talent for self-learning or merely someone who does it because they have no other choice?—either we are unable to learn from others or others are unable or unwilling to teach us. 🤔

A lot of people think self teaching can't happen, and it's often true: messy, false starts, incorrect assumptions and interpretations, and lack of motivation and follow through are all very real challenges without feedback and guidance. It's important to check for the Dunning-Kruger effect.

When I was growing up mostly left to my own devices to learn, with a minimal prescribed curriculum, but I was assessed every year. I would love if someone made or linked a huge repository of quizzes and tests for self assessment. There are sites like Kahn Academy, but one with advanced and specialized topics would be nice

How many focused hours did it take you to get your first job?

I finally got my first offer for a Junior Dev position, which I snapped up. I'm completely self-taught when it comes to coding, but had dabbled on and off since middle school. I got serious about #webdev a couple years ago and because I keep pretty good track of my hourly learning/project time I can say it took me about 600 hours to get the offer, but maybe I was ready at 450 / 500? Please count hours in school too!

The hardest thing about being an autodidact is the impostor syndrome. There's a wealth of information out there, and sometimes I feel paralyzed by all the massive traditions and ideas. How do I know for sure I read enough to have a definite answer on this or that subject ? What am I missing? The only way I found is to dare and have an incomplete opinion, but leave it always open to be challenged. That balance is tricky to maintain.

Micro-learning platforms are changing my life. It's literally weaponized ADHD.

In 30 minutes a day, I'm hitting Spanish through DuoLingo (on like a 500 day streak), Python through Mimo (HIGHLY recommend, also does SQL/PHP/HTML/CSS), Bible study (Bible app), Fortify (Accountability/Porn/SA app), KhanAcademy for random subjects.

I'm learning more by putting my time into these micro-lessons with mastery testing than I ever did in school. And I'm saving time from doom scrolling.
