I just finished the first part of my story of applying and getting hired at #automattic which to many is a dream workplace that managed to figure out remote work practices two decades ago.

I have seen many stories of the process online but I have not seen anything like my mine, which was coloured by negligence, bad management practices and a work culture that does not suit a cornerstone of the #WordPress community.

@joplinapp Kind of crazy that they also include #Simplenote, which seems a particularly bad choice for #journalists. Not only is there no #E2EE, but your #notes sit unencrypted on #Automattic’s servers. It’s not that they hold the #encryption keys instead of you, which would be bad enough. With Simplenote, there *are* no encryption keys for data at rest.

A client of mine is unable to get access to their WP/Automattic #DNS console and registration because it was purchased by someone who's gone and it's so hard to get access back even if they're actively using the domain for email and even have access to the nameserver console on Wix (don't ask). Automattic is asking for proof of registration of the domain but we don't even know the email address that was used. It's insane.

Anyone know how to get around this with #Automattic?

@voxpelli I know, but the #WordPress plugin responsible for posting this to Mastodon doesn't incorporate hashtags. I'd love it if #automattic would add an option to automatically use Wordpress post tags as hashtags... just saying.

A few days ago I praised #MattMullenweig from #Automattic #WordPress & #Tumblr as someone trying to be a good contributor to web culture.

He is currently doing a live stream for Tumblr users, and in response to an epileptic user asking if there could be a standard to prevent vibrant, strobing ads as they’re a seizure risk, he made some vague noises like “yeah I guess” then instantly uggested that the user buy the no-ad upgrade.

Paywalled accessibility? Like hell.

I rescind my praise.

Das findest du. Aber es gibt ja auch andere Instanzen, die manche Leute evt. ausschließen wollen, z.B. Nazi- oder Porno-Instanzen. Das würde bald unübersichtlich in der Auswahlliste der Sichtbarkeiten.

Übrigens: Meta verweist in einer aktuellen Pressemitteilung auf #Wordpress, für das es ein ActivityPub-Plugin gibt, und #Tumblr, das angekündigt hat, bald via AP zu föderieren. Beide gehören der Firma #Automattic. Die ist zwar nicht so skandalumwittert wie Facebook/Meta, aber sehr einflussreich, weil fast jede zweite Website von Wordpress angetrieben wird. Muss man die deföderieren? Ich sehe im Moment keinen Grund. Aber im Auge behalten. Zusammen mit Meta könnten sie die Zukunft von #ActivityPub dominieren. Bei der Weiterentwicklung des Standards die Zügel an sich zu reißen, wäre für diese Firmen ein Leichtes, weil das Normierungsgremium jetzt schon ein sehr zerstrittener chaotischer Haufen ist (so mein Eindruck von außen). #EEE
