3/5 Cruise hasn't mentioned anything about getting state certification, so they're likely only doing Level 3 testing which would have a person in the driver's seat, ready to take control.

State certification is not required for Level 3 testing (state law for AV's only covers Level 4-5).

Side note: permits aren't required for individuals; see the Tesla Autopilot beta-testing nonsense going on in Seattle over the past couple of years

1/5 Regarding the TechCrunch article on Cruise doing autonomous vehicle testing in Seattle (and DC), I dove into the various Seattle & Washington State laws & regulations to try to figure out what's happening.

It appears Cruise will operate in Seattle at SAE J3016 Level 3 (autonomous except when it prompts driver to take over), just as Zoox & NVIDIA are doing (2023 permits).

@arstechnica The majority of comments are, predictably, placing blame on the #AutonomousVehicle, not the dog (or the safety driver). This is reportedly a level 4 system, theoretically fully autonomous.

However, the article states that the dog ran out from between two cars, and was detected, but the vehicle was unable to stop in time.

Sounds to me like a human wouldn’t have done any better under these circumstances. It has even happened to me (the dog survived). 🤨

I began tracking promises of #AutonomousVehicle deployment back in 2015. I think 2022 can be considered the year AVs became "real." That said, the definition of "deployment" has become difficult to distinguish from research and pilot programs. AV deployment will be much slower (and less autonomous) than once thought. This will likely be the last update of this tracker.
