Interesting court case around crashes allegedly caused by the Tesla Autopilot mode. I will stick my neck out here, and semi-agree with Tesla. People should monitor the road context, you cannot just switch off and read or use your phone simply because your car has some degree of automation.

I was able to moderate an excellent panel on #autonomousvehicles at #Rally2023 this morning. The question was, basically, "Why are AVs difficult?" and the reasons, as you might suspect, were varied. A key takeaway point for me was that the industry has gotten us 90% of the way there, but the last 10% is gonna take way, way more work than what we've already done. Self-driving vehicles will happen - are happening - but the road ahead will be, um, interesting.

I’ve been trying to conceive of what #av ‘s could actually be useful for and here’s what I got:

- very light weight #EV ‘s
- max speed ~12mph
- accessible to wheelchairs, child seats, visually impaired users
- good for last mile journeys where other mobility tools aren’t convenient.
- part of public transit system

I can see using this if I’m picking up my kid and groceries and don’t wanna bike them up a giant hill.
