Why introduce so many new points of failure? This can't be simpler, better, safer or even cheaper than just adding some functions to the existing avionics: look at the latest Garmin products, they even include an "autoland" button, which will automatically land the plane at the nearest suitable airport. Without a silly robot.
This is just a stunt to raise research money.
As a side note, I still can't figure out why people thought "Airplane!" was a good movie. I hated it; just a string of the silliest lowest-effort jokes. Funny perhaps as party skits, but only once.

Nicht mit der Nordland am Grund der Kieler Bucht verwechseln! Angeblich #Autopilot und kein gehöriger Ausguck oder Routenplanung, da alle die Fussball-WM im TV verfolgten.
