Averse to life, I cower in fear
Of all the things that bring me tears.
It's a feeling that's hard to explain,
A constant battle that causes so much strain.
I try to find peace and take control,
But the anxiety creeps back, taking hold.

In moments of calm, I find solace,
But it never lasts, and the anxiety takes its place.
I try to stay strong, but it’s tough,
And I wonder, will it ever be enough?

In the room, his vanity won out over
That disappointment. He flexed his muscles
And smiled. She took one sharpened pencil,
Flung it at him, his eye the target. He was
Dead before he hit the ground. Only now
Did she start to draw him.

I use to be averse
To penning my feelings
In the form of verse

I did not know

I was not risk averse, but there's a limit to the things that even I was prepared to do. As I sat in the crowded cafe, the barista busy at the machine serving the regular daily patrons. I had my usual, flat white with one sugar and a macaroon. They knew exactly how I liked my coffee. We'd agreed to meet here as this was where we could conduct our business in relative anonymity.

"Think of the opportunity here. This would let you retire and finally live the life you always wanted" sipping on the steaming hot coffee, I looked down at the biscuit. I must admit, the money was quite appealing and it would let me escape from this clandestine life. I bit down on the biscuit, contemplating the offer on the table.

I was getting older, and the ritzy lifestyle that once drew me to my profession was now not so appealing. I had wanted a family, but in my line of work they were the kind of thing that could be used against you at any time. There was a girl once who stole my heart, but I cut it off. I wasn't prepared to risk losing her, or for a disgruntled acquaintance to seek revenge. Best to be alone than to have to mourn a loved one. I'd seen what that was like, but I was disconnected from my work, which made it more palatable.

"Let's order another coffee, shall we?" I finished off my latte and ordered another. He obliged, as I knew he would. I was the best in the business, and he knew it. If I did this, it would have to really count.

"This is the last time."
