On this day (8/11) in 1995: The first Embraer ERJ 145 takes to the sky. Quite a polarizing plane, the “jungle jet.” Love it? Hate it?

We *loved* OneJet with its all business cabin. Sadly, they aren’t around anymore.

Top to bottom: Convair F-102 Delta Dagger, Republic F-105 Thunderchief, McDonnell F-101 Voodoo, North American F-100 Super Sabre, Convair F-106 Delta Dart, Lockheed F-104 Starfighter.

, 17 Apr 1964, Jerrie Mock touches down in Columbus Ohio and becomes the first woman to fly solo around the world. Press coverage of the time makes much of her being a “housewife”. 🙄

, 16 Apr 1912, Harriet Quimby becomes the first woman to fly a plane across the English Channel.

Quimby was the first American woman to receive a pilot’s licence and made her living doing exhibition flights in the US. She also made money as the advertising face of a grape juice and writing screenplays for silent shorts. She died in July 1912 when her plane pitched forward at 1,000 feet and she fell.

Digging through my various links of historic aviation information and realized I haven't shared much on that here.

For this topic, I focus on the Northern Nevada section of the Transcontinental Airway System so these links are the ones directly to the Reno information. If you don’t know about this, in the early 1920s to mid 1930s, a system of large concrete navigational arrows and (later) lit beacons guided pilots across the United States to deliver mail. While many of the beacons and arrows were destroyed due to the war (recycle the metal and prevent enemy pilots from using the system), there are many that still exist. I like finding them.

These first links are to the Library of Congress archive of aeronautical strip maps (loc.gov/maps/?fa=segmentof:g37) and sectional aeronatucial charts (loc.gov/resource/g3701pm.gct00) really helpful in locating where beacons and arrows are/were.

This link is the 1921 pilot's guide when flying along the route. Fun seeing what landmarks still exist 100 years later. archivaria.com/PilotDirections

Finally, here is a site that details abandoned and little known airfields. Some of which were in service during the 1920s-1930s so the webmaster includes photos and charts for those specifically. airfields-freeman.com/NV/Airfi

Celebrating 's legacy is important. It includes preserving local stories that made history. Asas Para Porto Seguro (in Portuguese) tells how the former Arraial d’Ajuda airfield in Bahia, Brazil shaped this coastal community. 🇧🇷✈️
