Britain's long-lasting snow patch melts away for 10th time in 300 years

Nicknamed “the Sphinx”, the hardy patch of snow is found on #Braeriach (Scotland’s third-highest mountain at 1,296m) near #Aviemore in the #Cairngorms. Before 2000 it had melted only three times in the last 150 years.

A hot weekend in the #Highlands, where the preserved #Strathspey #Railway are having to use #diesel #locomotives instead of #steam to prevent lineside #fires. It's still a lovely trip, though, if you are in the #Aviemore area!

@windywilson88 We're at #Aviemore just now. Morning was dry, bit of sun, and plenty wind. However, pleasant 11km walk along river and back along #StrathspeyWay. Turning cooler now - no rain yet.

Quick walk up Craigellachie above Aviemore this morning.

Have always wondered about going up or down via High Burnside, it looks an obvious route. So came down that way. No path on the ground, just a lot of boggy heather, a deer fence to climb, and a stream to cross, then eventually picked up the estate track through the forest down to High Burnside.

So now I know.

These metal artworks in the woods always remind me of the lamp post in Narnia, which grew magically from a bit of old lamp post thrown on the ground. Maybe these have grown magically from bits of scrap metal blown from the recycling centre just across the railway.
