On this day in 1536 Sir John Gilbert, the eldest of Katherine Raleigh’s sons was born.

His magnificent tomb is in Exeter Cathedral where his effigy lies alongside his wife Elizabeth Chudleigh . The Gilbert coat of arms and the Gilbert arms quartered with those of Chudleigh, are prominent and a rather endearing squirrel, the Gilbert family crest lies at John’s feet.
