Me to #AWS support: "I got a service error message after a Control Tower upgrade IAM action X was blocked due to an SCP, but I reviewed my SCPs and there aren't any Deny statements related to X or the applicable ARNs. What gives?"

AWS support: "Sure let me contact the service team."

(15 days pass)

AWS support: "The service team says IAM action was blocked by an SCP, please read this link to an 101-level description of what SCPs are."

I mean, not even READING the ticket history to see what I already did, and simply assuming I don't know what SCPs are, is a new low in all of my interactions with them. Let's hope this is just a post- #awsreinvent fluke and things get back to normal "customer obsession" standards soon.

#Metrics and why it matters what you measure because measures which become targets result in "interesting" side effects.

In this case latency and p50/p90 metrics which results in bi-modal distributions.

Their recommendation:
- trimmed means as goal (throw away noise at the end, avg the rest)
- Look at histograms

Abby gave a talk at re:Invent this year on how AWS handled Log4Shell - which is pretty unique at this point in AWS's presentation history. We don't often talk about what happened behind the scenes in Security.

I'm super proud of the work AWS did in this event. Big props to the builders. Big props to the incident commanders. Big props to the Red Teams of Amazon. I'm also so glad that this December we are not knee deep in this. :)

Any time you hear the words "block" or "detect" in this talk - my team was right there doing analysis, generating ideas, partnering with the builders, and validating that everything stops an attacker.
