🇺🇸USS Yorktown (CV-5)

Lead ship of her class of 3 aircraft carriers, laid down 21 May 1934. The Yorktowns were the first purpose-built fleet carriers of the US Navy, capable of carrying up to 90 aircraft. Rushed to the Pacific after the attack on Pearl Harbor, Yorktown launched raids in the Solomon islands before being dispatched with the fleet carrier Lexington to the Coral Sea on 3 May 1942 to stop the Japanese invasion of Port Moresby, New Guinea. This was the first battle at sea conducted entirely by aircraft, with the ships involved never sighting each other. During the battle, Yorktown's flight deck was holed by a 250 kg bomb which penetrated 4 decks before exploding, killing 66 sailors.

With US codebreakers having cracked the main IJN naval code, US Fleet Adm. Chester Nimitz was aware of IJN Admiral Isoroku Yamamoto's plan to attack Midway Island and to draw the Pacific Fleet into a decisive battle. The Japanese believed that Yorktown had been sunk at Coral Sea, but she was instead rushed to Pearl Harbor and made battle ready in 3 days and sent with her sisters Enterprise and Hornet to engage the Japanese at Midway. Sailing with USS Saratoga's air wing after the heavy aircraft losses at Coral Sea, Yorktown's aircraft were the key to the US victory at Midway on June 4-5, 1942. However, Yorktown herself was the main US casualty of the battle, as she was located by aircraft from Hiryū and hit with 3 bombs and 2 torpedoes, putting the ship out of action. Damage control parties managed to keep the carrier afloat, but while salvage parties were attempting further repairs, the Japanese submarine I-168 located the US fleet and launched 4 torpedoes. One struck the destroyer USS Hammann and broke her in two, while two others hit Yorktown. She finally sank on 7 June 1942.

In Azur Lane, Yorktown's skill “Vengeance" commemorates the orphaned aircraft from the crippled carrier that launched from Enterprise to destroy Hiryū, the final remaining Japanese carrier at Midway.

🇬🇧HMS Black Prince

oDido-class light cruiser, laid down 2 November 1939. Black Prince was the 5th Royal Navy warship named after Edward “The Black Prince”, son of King Edward III and scourge of the French in the Hundred Years' War. Black Prince served on convoy duty in the Arctic and then supported the D-Day landings before ending WW2 in the Pacific bombarding Japan. After service with the New Zealand Navy, she was somewhat ironically towed to Osaka for scrapping. The tug which towed her was named the Benten Maru, also the name of the MC Mariko Kato’s pirate ship in the anime Mōretsu Pirates.

VA Hisako Kanemoto, Kanami in "Sora no Woto" and Grunhilde in Mōretsu Pirates (see, there was a reason for the trivia), as well as voicing Djeeta in Granblue Fantasy.

🇩🇪KMS Köln

Königsberg-class light cruiser, launched 23 May 1928. An interwar treaty cruiser, Köln was heavily armed, with 9 150mm guns in 3 triple turrets and 12 torpedo launchers in 3 quad mounts. In exchange, the Königsberg-class were thinly armored, with just 50 mm of main belt armor and 40 mm on the deck. Köln provided fire support during the invasion of Norway, but was a training ship at he end of WW2, when she was sunk by US bombers while docked in Wilhelmshaven on 30 March 1945.

In Azur Lane, Köln is the shipgirl that runs Tactical Training, so is seen by commanders every day. She also has a special skill after retrofit which allows her to deploy the Flettner Fl 282 Kolibri, (Hummingbird), an early helicopter design that was trialed on Köln in 1940-1942. As the Kriegsmarine was interested in the aircraft as an antisubmarine spotter, her skill provides a large ASW buff that is unfortunately fairly useless since enemy submarines are rarely a danger in AL.

VA Ryōko Ono, now retired. She also voices the other Königsberg-class cruisers as well as KMS Leipzig, showing off her range.

🇫🇷 MNF Jean Bart

Richelieu-class battleship, laid down 12 December 1936. Much like the previous Dunkerque-class, the Richelieus carried their main battery forward in 2 quadruple turrets, mounting 380 mm 45 caliber Modèle 1935 guns, the largest guns ever fielded by the French Navy. Nine 152 mm guns in 3 triple turrets were placed on the stern of the ships.

At the outbreak of war, Jean Bart was not complete and she was rushed to Casablanca to escape the German occupation. The Vichy government attempted to complete her outfitting, but Jean Bart anchored in Casablanca with only one of her main battery turrets functional and no secondary guns. This saved the ship during her subsequent duel with USS Massachusetts, which scored a direct hit with a 406 mm shell that penetrated both armor decks but exploded in the empty magazine for the 152 mm guns.

Jean Bart was not completed until after WW2, but served in the French fleet until 1955, finally being scrapped in 1970.

Jean Bart was named after a feared French privateer, and there are many references in Azur Lane to her piratical background.

🇩🇪 SMS Emden

Dresden-class cruiser, laid down 1 November 1906. Emden spent most of her short career in the Indian Ocean as part of the German East Asia squadron, and during WW1 attacked Penang, where she she sank the Russian cruiser Zhemchug and the French destroyer Mousquet. After steaming to the Cocos Islands on 9 November 1914 to destroy British shore facilities, she was surprised by HMAS Sydney, which disabled her, and forced her captain Karl von Müller to run her aground. 133 men of her complement of 376 were killed and most of the rest taken prisoner.

VA Honoka Inoue, whose main claim to fame is that she is the daughter of well-known VA Kikuko Inoue.

🇺🇸 USS Laffey (DD-459)

Benson-class destroyer, laid down 13 January 1941. She had been commissioned for less than 8 months when she fought in the First Naval Battle of Guadalcanal on the night of 13 November 1942. During the ensuing melee, Laffey and the IJN Kongō-class battleship Hiei came withing 6m of each other, with Laffey raking Hiei's superstructure at point-blank range with every weapon at her disposal, wounding the Japanese fleet commander Admiral Hiroaki Abe. Fighting free of Hiei, Laffey was then surrounded by 4 Japanese destroyers and a torpedo from one of them detonated her magazine and she sank almost immediately. Amazingly, 188 of her crew of 247 survived, but her captain William Hank was killed.

Laffey is one of the poster girls of Azur Lane, where her propensity to nap at every opportunity is her main personality trait, ironic in view of the furious struggle that ended in the demise of her namesake.

VA Maria Naganawa, also appearing as Komekko in KonoSuba, and Kanna in Miss Kobayashi's Dragon Maid.

Azur Lane Ship of the Day (SotD)!

🇮🇹 RN Carabiniere

Soldati-class destroyer, laid down 1 February 1937. She has the distinction of having served as part of both the Axis and the Allies in WW2, having been sent to the Far East to fight after the declaration of war against the Japanese by the Italian Republic in July of 1945. Carabiniere survived the war and was not scrapped until 1978.

In Azur Lane, she wears the distinctive plumed hat, the Lucerna, of the Arma dei Carabinieri national police of Italy, still worn as part of their dress uniform.

VA Rika Tachibana, probably best known as Kyaru in Princess Connect Re:Dive.

🇬🇧 HMS Erebus

Lead ship of her class laid down 12 October 1915. The Erebus class were the last of their type of warship known as a "monitor" whose function was bombardment of shore installations. Equipped with the 15" guns of a battleship, the vessels were otherwise slow and unseaworthy, since they were intended to operate in coastal waters. Erebus served in both World Wars, bombarding German positions during the D-Day landings and later in the Netherlands. She was scrapped in July 1946.

In Azur Lane, the Royal Navy monitors have a unique barrage attack and are useful in early game mob clearing fleets, but have poor survivability.

VA Saya Horigome, who also voices Cleveland in AL, but her career was mainly as an actress and she has had few anime roles.

Favorite voice line: ‌いっぺん、死んでみる？(Would you like to try dying once?) *This is a reference to the anime Hell Girl, where it is the main character Enma Ai's signature line. Horigome delivers it exactly like Yui Horie does in that show.

🇬🇧 HMS Warspite

The Queen Elizabeth class battleship was the sixth English warship to carry the name Warspite, a reference to both her contempt for her enemies, but also the common name of the European green woodpecker, which in the days of sail implied that she could bore holes through those enemies.

Warspite was laid down 21 October 1912, the 2nd of her class, and first saw combat in WW1 at the Battle of Jutland in 1916, where she was hit 15 times, including damage to her steering gear which would prove balky for the remainder of her career. In the mid 1930s Warspite was extensively refitted, gaining upgraded propulsion, armor, and armament, gaining an Admiralty Fire Control Table Mk VII.

Her upgraded fire control would prove its worth in WW2 at the Battle of Calabria where she set a record for the longest range gunnery hit between two moving warships, hitting the Italian battleship Giulio Cesare from 24 km away. This achievement is the basis for her Divine Marksman skill in Azur Lane.

Warspite earned 15 battle honors in her long career, which ended somewhat ignominiously when she grounded in Prussia Cove in Cornwall in 1946 while being towed to be scrapped at Faslane and eventually was salvaged on site.
