We criticise social media for being US-centric. Mastodon is more diverse but still, imhoa Anglo-centric. People posting in their second language and maybe losing some nuance.

The good thing about the #Deepl #translation service is it's easy and begins to #Babelfish the Fediverse.

The not so good is that Deepl may follow the internet startup trend to give their services away but then when dependent restrict and then monetise them.

An open source self-hosted service is what we really need.

Rereading Vernor Vinge's "A Fire Upon the Deep", I came across the sentence "Effective translation of natural languages comes awfully close to requiring a sentient translator program."

This aged badly -- but it's a reminder of how amazing Google Translate now is, by 1990s standards.

I am hoping for a day when AI/ML-powered #translation services become available for free and devs can make auto-translated content the DEFAULT setting, instead of having it one-click away...

That would truly be an excellent homage to #DouglasAdams - our own version of the #BabelFish!

Imagine reading something originally written in French, replying in English but it gets auto-translated and reaches the other person as a message in French! Tell me that isn't awesome?! :)
