A Wall brown #butterfly came to visit the back garden today! Almost assumed it was just another gatekeeper, but then noticed he had rather more complex patterns. A bit the worse for wear, but welcome and delightful nonetheless. #Entomology #BackGardenEntomology #ButterfliesUK

Home finally & Tigger found this huge bumblebee queen staggering slowly around the undergrowth today.

It’s probably a buff-tailed or large earth bumblebee (Bombus terrestris). Unclear whether it was looking to hibernate or perhaps even woken from sleep by today’s very unseasonal >15°C temperatures.

That said, some remain active over the whole winter these days due in part to climate change, so I’ll keep an eye out in the coming weeks.
