The discovery of a #huge_fossilised_skull that was #wrapped_up and #hidden in a #Chinese_well nearly 90 #years ago has forced scientists to #rewrite the #story of #human_evolution.

Analysis of the remains has $revealed a new branch of the human family tree that points to a previously #unknown_sister_group more closely related to modern humans than the Neanderthals.

The extraordinary fossil has been named a #new_human_species, #Homo_longi or #Dragon_man, by #Chinese researchers, although other experts are more cautious about the designation.

“I think this is one of the most important #finds of the past 50 years,” said Prof Chris Stringer, research leader at the Natural History #Museum in #London, who worked on the project. “It’s a wonderfully #preserved_fossil.”

The skull appears to have a remarkable #backstory. According to the researchers, it was originally found in 1933 by Chinese laborer's building a #bridge over the #Songhua_River in #Harbin, in China’s northernmost province, #Heilongjiang, during the #Japanese occupation.

To keep the skull from #falling into #Japanese_hands it was #wrapped and hidden in an #abandoned_well, resurfacing only in 2018 after the man who hid it told his #grandson about it shortly #before he #died..

Despite being a character born of some of my hornier thoughts, she also has a tragic backstory! Born the human Jewelyn Blovulena (though her initials are JB, her name now is Jb, an Egyptian word for heart), she was always too intense, controlling, and clingy for her partners and could never keep a relationship for long. She began to grow despondent, and one evening after someone broke up with her a mysterious figure approached her offering a way for her to attract anyone permanently. She took it, and this demonic figure, Darmenzi, transformed her into the lamia Jb, with all the powers of a love goddess--and the curse of one, as she now needs a steady stream of new worshipers, or the lack of worship and belief will cause her to fade. Thus her warping and stealing of minds has an element of necessity--should she not do so, she will die. Over the years, however, she's gradually lost her humanity, and would now steal souls even if she wasn't cursed.

More backstory fragments. Everything was fine until Sawyer turned 5. Then her mom decided it was time to make keeping her worth her while.

Sawyer, because she was born a futa in a not so friendly town, became a very beloved apothecary (and secret magic user's) most closely held secret. Her escape at age 14 was nothing short of miraculous, albeit a bit messy.
