Found a bunch of big, fat, pale grubs in our compost pile today as I was turning it. Not sure what they would have pupated into (hawk moths, maybe). They were each 2 to 3cm long.
I dropped them into the platform bird feeder and spent the next 20 minutes sipping tea and watching the nuthatches have a field day. Eat up birdies. Make some babies!

Youngest villain helped me assemble, oil, and place a woodpecker nest box in Yggdrasil today! There have been downy, hairy, and red-bellied woodpeckers (male & female for all three species) at the suet feeder this spring. So far only Nuthatches have expressed interest, but I’m hopeful.
Box made from a 1x8x8ft board of rough pine. Oiled with mineral oil to add a bit of water resistance.

We're intermittent bird feeders at my house. Always & only black oil sunflower seeds. We've an open air feed atop an 6 ft pole with a baffle that (amazingly) keeps the squirrels at bay. We stock the feeder w/ about 2 cups of seed ever 2--3 days (daily if there's a bitter cold snap).
As w/ dogs, an intermittent "reward" system garners more interest & engagement.
