Fascinating article. A bacterium with a strange life cycle, carrying a virus letting it utilise certain nitrogen sources, that's then transmitted when exposed to those chemicals. We've so much to learn about deep ocean ecology. elifesciences.org/reviewed-pre

This is intriguing: phage therapy induces bacterial resistance but also reduced virulence.

So clinical benefit post-phage could also stem from bacterial attenuation rather than just eradication.

Question is how sustainable this effect may be.

Bees, like all other organisms, have a lot of parasites. And it is likely that these are the main contributors to issues like colony collapse disorder (CCD).

UT Austin scientists have targeted one such deadly fungal parasite, Nosema ceranae, and have genetically modified a bacteria commonly found in bee guts to produce an RNA interference system preventing the fungus from making spores.

Not all fix carbon through . Some (lithoautotrophs) use the minerals leached from rock for energy. Acidithiobacillus ferrooxidans metabolizes pyrite with oxygen to produce sulfites and sulfuric acid. This causes Acid Mine Drainage in that drain old coal mines. This *very acidic discharge is oxidized as it contacts air, turning iron bright orange (rust), and contains many metals.

Meet speaker Rotem Sorek. At the Weizmann Institute of Science, he investigates the interactions between and the viruses that infect them. He studies how these attack bacteria, and how bacteria defend themselves against such attacks. microbiology2023.de

Okay, instead of making bacteria-laden sun tea, I experimented making a batch of iced tea in the fridge, letting the bags steep for twenty-four hours. The results is meh. Doesn’t taste bad but lacks the punch of tea brewed in the sun. Back to risking growth of Klebsiella and Enterobacter but better tasting iced tea.
