After #Acronis True Image backup price hike I've been testing alternative backup systems. This time tried #Bacula server, running in Docker container in #Unraid server and clients in PCs.
It's very flexible and it took a day to figure out how it works. I got first full backup from a Windows desktop. I like many things like the scheduling system and how the server writes the bulk data into large BLOB files (e.g UrBackup writes zillion files). But there is one showstopper: restoration test fails, giving an SQL error. The Baculum webui has restoration wizard which selects a backup, then I select a file to be restored, but it fails when trying to run it. Hmm...
#dar 17/ In my mind, dar fills a nice niche: it doesn't have all the overhead of #Bacula/#Bareos, doesn't have all the limitations and bugs of #tar, and is extremely flexible. I have been using it to back up my non-ZFS machines to an airgapped destination and it is perfect.

I just thanked a sponsor for something which lets one of my projects keep running. They wrote back mentioning my work on #FreshPorts, #PostgreSQL, and #Bacula.
In this post, I'm talking about the quantity-of-work-to-wider-affect ratio.
From time to time, I think my work on Bacula has had the widest affect. I wrote the first of two modules for that project:
* The PostgreSQL backend (I wasn't going to use Bacula without it) for the Catalog (what is backed up where and from what and when).
* The initial proof-of-concept for encryption at the client (bacula-fd) - the goal: touch only the client and leave everything else transparent to the encryption. https://www.langille.org/bacula-encryption/
I cannot imagine the amount of data which is backed up using the work which evolved out that little project. The user-pool is smaller than FreshPorts I'm sure, but I've spent a great deal more time on FreshPorts than Bacula. Hence, the bang-for-the buck ratio I'm getting at.
#freshports #postgresql #bacula
In the past two days, I've had two separate instances of recovery of data from backups:
1 - I munged the merge of /etc/master.passwd and /etc/group on a #FreeBSD jail. I recovered those two files from a #Bacula backup,
2 - I removed an AAAA record from a domain using nsupdate while I was debugging some IPv6 issues and attempting to get pfSense and Verizon to play well together. I gave up and went back to Hurricane Electric for now (mostly because I have a static block from them). For that data recovery, I went to subversion.
What? Subversion and nsupdate? How do I do that? with nsnotifyd - it's a tiny daemon which listens for zone updates, then runs a script. That script saves the updates to subversion for me. It has been doing this for over 4 years now. Completely automated 100% - it is truly wonderful.
The beauty of nsnotifyd is you can make it run any script[s] you want. It's designed for exactly that. I have 4.5 years of DNS updates across 26 domains. It's my biggest backup set I think.

The other day I found out that #bacula backup comes with the source code of a tool called "bsnapshot" in src/tools and isn't build on default. But builds and runs alright on #FreeBSD. I uploaded the binary to one of my backup clients and set-up a FileSet with Snapshot enabled. And *tada* now the job creates zfs snapshots and backs them up. I got to dig a bit deeper on why it isn't build/installed with sysutils/bacula1X-client and how stable this is. If you have a clue let me know.
The tangible material for our upcoming course (US times, online) is about to get shipped.
Thanks to a really fast printer, we could work around our regular supplier's unavailabilty. Kudos to the team at http://cca-digitaldruck.de !
Due to short notice cancellation, we have seats for our upcoming -- June 27 to July 1 -- #Bacula Admin I #training available!
In UK, France, Germany, Austria, BeNeLux we should be able to ship material in time. Get in touch here, or at https://www.baculasystems.com/bacula-administrator-i-training-course/
This training is explicitly directed at Bacula Community users as well as Enterprise customers.
#jetlag by #homeoffice ;-)
Providing an online course to participants in North America.
They are a great group, and I like training for #bacula so everything is fine!
@tulpa @jefmes if it's supposed to be useful, removable media is the way to go for desktop #backup -- you explained why.
How about portable SSD and rsync, so you can easily pause and resume?
If a less lightweight solution is needed, use a real backup software such as #bacula, of course...
Now let's find out if from no social media to Mastodon is a feasible move ;-)
So, needing backup and recovery and wanting FOSS? Check out what we can do with #bacula :-)
Nouvelle version majeur de Bacula (version communautaire). Je vais tester ça dans les jours a venir !
#Bacula Release 11.0.0 (beta)
