Warum kennen wir eigentlich nur queere Idole und ihre Geschichten? Schurken-Geschichten sind doch mindestens genauso spannend โ Bad Gays eben!

#21 Bad Gays (the podcast)
Do not be fooled by its flippant (and somewhat reductive) name! This is an extremely well-researched podcast that centers the people it covers within the appropriate historical and cultural context. They also discuss the fact that a) the people they cover would often not consider themselves to be gay as we understand it today (since it is a relatively new construct) and b) some of the people they cover might not even be queer in any sense.
That might seem like a weird direction to take, given the name of the podcast, but consider: sometimes historical figures leave us explicit sex diaries (*cough*Roger casement*cough*), but more often they do not! Sometimes the only evidence we have that a person may have been queer is posthumous slander or a Soviet show-trial (yes, really). Which isn't, uhh, great. By covering people with very explicit evidence, people with very scanty evidence, and everyone in between, this allows the podcast to sidestep the tired debated over whether a historical figures was "really" gay. Instead they look at the evidence (as much or little of it as there is), discuss it, and then discuss what that would have meant in that particular context. What did it mean that this person who may not have been gay at all was accused of being gay in a Soviet show-trial? What did this mean about how the USSR thought homosexuality?
Anyway, I happened to listen to the episode on Benjamin Britton about a month before I watched #Tรกr and it definitely influenced how I interpreted the movie. It probably was not an intended parallel, but it was interesting anyway.

My first instance โ benwritesthings@mastodon.online โ was slow and buggy so trying it out here. I'm a writer, #histodon of sorts, #queerhistory practitioner, culture #journalist, #opera queen, and faggot living in Berlin, Germany. I wrote #BadGays with Huw Lemmey and host the #podcast of the same name with him. Let's see how this goes.
