Web developers: If you can't stop your stakeholders from making you put a "live help" or "May I help you?" chat(bot) widget on your site, see if you can at least get them to agree that if the user has already dismissed it X times (like say 3), you should stop showing it anymore.
Or, try suggesting X be 1 time, and let them talk you down to 3.

Sure, I didn't need to read any of those options
(This is the page as is, no dark mode hacks or anything)
@eclectech I hear you! The most egregious on that score has to be the process for the remote person to approve a screen sharing request in macOS. The notification pops up in the corner, with *no* indication of any action to take until you mouse over the notification, and even then you don’t see a menu until you click on the “Options” button. smh. I go with AnyDesk most of the time because of that.

It is not a dark pattern as such, but Element (web based matrix client) keeps nagging me about notifications being disabled.
Yes, I know. That's how I like it.
wow do not ask me to sign up for your newsletter without even letting me look at your site! i literally don't know who you are. what the fuck. instant clickoff

Contentful is soooooo slow, so they added some funny sentences to go along with the loading indicators (The Sims style, yeah, even with llamas). It's annoying.
The reason it worked for The Sims is that in that specific case you are waiting to play a game. It's fun. You are in a fun headspace.
On Contentful, you want to get work done, but you keep having to wait to load anything in there. It's annoying and kinda sounds like it's mocking you.
Over 30 years of using their product and this is an example of why I still hate every second of it to this very day... Microsoft continues to pull this stupid, user-hostile shit in their interface.
How can you be a software developer and still be unaware that you should never have Yes, No, Cancel dialogues? It was terrible UI back in the last century. It is completely unforgivable now.
Any budding developers out there? Please do not do this.
Grrr.

Hey so see that little line under DC indicator on this multimeter? That's not decoration. That's negative. Means that the power leads were likely backwards when i was working on this controller, which probably damaged the regulator.
In UI design, this seems like a poor place to put the minus sign.

Mental Health provider intake paperwork. An attempt was made, I guess?
(I’m mildly saddened there’s no option for “effing complicated”.)

I never noticed before that in #Jira, the comment sort order is a site-wide setting, not per-user. That's a #BadUXDesign decision that didn't matter until a couple of days ago, when my site's admin switched it from oldest-first (so you could always find the newest comment at the bottom of the page) to newest-first (so now it's somewhere in the middle — just where depends on how long the description is, how many attachments, and how many comments). #BadUX that I can't override sucks! ☹
Ok so like, I spent a bunch of time yesterday on desktop #GoogleMaps saving lunch places close to the courthouse. And when I need to look at it on jury duty lunch break, I open up the iPhone iOS #app….and all the saves are 3 more clicks under “collections” instead of “lists??” (I don’t see ANY of it on the iPad app either!)
Someone please explain this to me. 🫠
😵💫 #badUX
Throwing a HCI research topic out there for anyone interested in running with it (and someone isn't already): Algorithmic Fatigue.
In my own life, I'm getting sick of content suggested to me algorithmically WITHOUT any way to override it. This is well documented in social networks, but today's biggest offender is Google Now, who insists on taking a full screen to try and be a tabloid instead of telling me the current weather and other USEFUL information.

Important tip for web developers: when the user clicks on a button, they need to see *some* kind of action immediately. If your page just sits there doing nothing visible*, people will think something's gone wrong.
At least turn the button they just clicked into a spinner or something.
* Yes, I get that it's sending an API call in the background that determines what to do next, and this *does* block next-"page" render. It's still #BadUX.

News websites 2023 "just play the video about this one story instead of auto-continuing with other videos" challenge. Difficulty: apparently huge. #UX #BadUX #BadUXDesign
Sá rétt í þessu að YouTube eru að prófa sig áfram með breytingar á layoutinu hjá sér til að koma betur að Shorts, en þetta er ekki að ganga að mínu mati..
You have to admire Amazon’s dedication in absolutely delivering the worst experience in their apps.

I am rapidly developing a real hatred of Microsoft Teams. Practically every #UX decision in it is different from what I want.
"Should notifications show any preview of the message itself?" No, just tell the user they got a message, but not any clue about what it says!
"After a user inserts a link into a message, where should their focus be?" Put it down on the send button; if they want to type more, make then Shift-Tab a bunch of times to get back to the text entry area!
And so on.
