Web developers: If you can't stop your stakeholders from making you put a "live help" or "May I help you?" chat(bot) widget on your site, see if you can at least get them to agree that if the user has already dismissed it X times (like say 3), you should stop showing it anymore.

Or, try suggesting X be 1 time, and let them talk you down to 3.

Sure, I didn't need to read any of those options

(This is the page as is, no dark mode hacks or anything)

One of the most annoying, and easily-remedied, peeves is: making the visited links the same color as unvisited (plain/default) links.

I described it as a Web Design issue instead of because IME, developers are rarely if ever the ones doing this. Designers, please remember usability is crucial; hiding people's ability to tell where they've been is .

If you're a , push back on this if asked to do it!

Oh, it gets better.
The modal that asks you to download Chrome can be closed and you can continue using the site as normal. But because the modal completely covers the sign in form, that's not obvious. Bad UX and raised a ticket that didn't even need to be raised.

I never noticed before that in , the comment sort order is a site-wide setting, not per-user. That's a decision that didn't matter until a couple of days ago, when my site's admin switched it from oldest-first (so you could always find the newest comment at the bottom of the page) to newest-first (so now it's somewhere in the middle — just where depends on how long the description is, how many attachments, and how many comments). that I can't override sucks! ☹

Auto makers might be moving from touchscreens back to physical, tactile controls? *Yes, please!* Touchscreens are a *horrible* UI for a car!

Important tip for web developers: when the user clicks on a button, they need to see *some* kind of action immediately. If your page just sits there doing nothing visible*, people will think something's gone wrong.

At least turn the button they just clicked into a spinner or something.

* Yes, I get that it's sending an API call in the background that determines what to do next, and this *does* block next-"page" render. It's still .

News websites 2023 "just play the video about this one story instead of auto-continuing with other videos" challenge. Difficulty: apparently huge.

In case you were wondering how to make a poll that uses check boxes instead of radio buttons: while making the poll, tap on one of the radio buttons (to the left of "choice 1", "choice 2", etc.) That toggles them to check boxes and back.

Not exactly discoverable, but easy enough once you find it.

@searls Wow, that's absolutely horrible design. Seriously, one for the hall of fame (or shame).

Dear Microsoft Teams: When someone highlights some text in a chat so they can copy-paste it into another app, they just want the stuff they so carefully highlighted.

They DO NOT want the other person's name and the timestamp prepended to what they copied.

Especially if what they copied was a URL.

Stop that shit.

I think "pop up a modal expladvertising the app's new feature when the user starts it" needs to be seen as a pattern or anti-pattern. It's annoying AF, and too many apps have done it to me recently.

If you can't find any way to avoid this thing, at least put in a link that lets me learn about it *later*, not just "learn more right now" (when I opened the app to perform some other task) or "forget about it forever" options.

I feel like there's some cargo-cult happening on the site I'm looking at. If you hover your mouse over one of the items in this list, it changes background color... even though clicking on it does nothing.

Yes, it's good to show a visible hover-state indicator on interactive elements. But not on NON-interactive ones! , push back on requirements like this if you receive them!

So tired of apps defaulting to "when you try to close me, I'll just minimize and sit in your system tray instead," and making me find some obscure setting to make it JUST CLOSE WHEN I HIT THE "CLOSE" BUTTON, like any normal app.

Seriously, if I wanted to minimize it, I'd have hit the "minimize" button. It's right next to the "close" button. It's no wonder average users are constantly unsure of what anything does on their computer - apps keep violating standards.

Want to see an example of why in so many projects, especially but not exclusively FOSS ones, is such crap? Check out some of the replies to cyberplace.social/@GossiTheDog, basically espousing the idea that we don't want to do *anything* that larger social networks do - including "provide a welcoming first-time experience". As one critic of this approach points out, it's like "inviting people to a party and then greeting them with stony silence when they arrive."
