A bagworm (f. Psychidae) in the North Woods of Central Park in late May. These eventually end up as moths called bagworm moths.

I think this is a "bag" belonging to a Common Bagworm Moth. I didn't know they existed until today!
It's attached to the trunk of a silver birch. The caterpillar lives inside the bag, sticking it legs out to move around, withdrawing back into the bag during the day or when it feels threatened.
