I recently read Why Fish Don't Exist, and a sample of one of the books that inspired it, Naming Nature. Both of those turned out to be relevant to several of the science talks at #Balticon. Did you know that peregrine falcons are more closely related to parrots and songbirds than to hawks, eagles, or owls?
The John Scalzi readings this morning were an absolute blast (we also learned a lot about his cats) #Balticon
I’m at #Balticon! Today’s attire is my Ursula K. Le Guin quote t-shirt.
“We live in capitalism. Its power seems inescapable. But so did the divine right of kings.”
Getting in some shop time before heading to #Balticon this afternoon. I’m attending today, Saturday until 2 PM, and Sunday. Who will I see there?
On the road for #Balticon now! Excited to both be a fan and be on panels. Not so excited about the long drive. :D I feel like younger me, driving through PA to avoid paying tolls and save money!
This is a large part of the reasons I won't be going to #Balticon .

I'm not going to #Balticon. It's a long trip, but one I've made several times before, the last time maybe a decade ago. The reasons are contained in this blog post: https://garymcgath.com/wp/turning-point-fannish-bullying/
Balticon still has a blanket prohibition on "derogatory comments" about anyone, which can easily be used to stomp on any member with opinions.
As I burn down tweets, it is bringing up memories.
At #Balticon 2009 I was in the dealers room looking for a very specific era of John Brunner books. David Hartwell walked by, a total stranger to me.
I asked "I'm looking for transitional Brunner as he became the proto-cyberpunk author but not quite there." He walked to the shelf, looked a moment and said "This one, this one and that one." I shook his hand on off he went.
That in a nutshell is why I love science fiction fandom.
Just checked. Yup. Balticon is a pass for me. No one interesting and nothing worth the trip. That’s just me.
