Special visitors to the feeders today: the Baltimore oriole and the ruby throated hummingbirds. Both will be gone to the south soon, so I find myself appreciating them more than usual.

This female or juvenile bird landed on my nectar feeder--proof that the Baltimore orioles are starting their migration back south. I will put out jelly for it tomorrow--perhaps it will come back and bring some friends. (Pictures are soft because it was dark and rainy when she visited.)

A male Baltimore Oriole is a stunning bird to see singing at the top of a tree.

It should not have been as difficult as it was to spot this guy thru the lens 🤷‍♂️😂 I heard him singing and could see him with my naked eyes, but the camera was almost too much to ask for.

Migration is progressing. More types of are appearing. Today I am waiting for the junk haulers, so I'm from my kitchen.

More swinging.

Here's another photo of Baltimore orioles (Icterus galbula) at my swing feeder, it seems pretty popular. The birds with the less brilliant yellow and brown wings are females. Though, I've read juvenile males may also be less brilliant.

I had it first.

Here we have two Baltimore orioles (Icterus galbula) arguing over a swing. Not really, there is half of an orange in the swing, so I think it's a dispute over the orange.

"Baltimore Orioles sometimes use their slender beaks to feed in an unusual way, called “gaping”: they stab the closed bill into soft fruits, then open their mouths to cut a juicy swath from which they drink with their brushy-tipped tongues." - allaboutbirds.org

Hey batter, batter, batter.

About a month or two ago somebody from Texas mentioned seeing some Baltimore Orioles (Icterus galbula) and I commented how I'd love to photograph some of those birds. Well yesterday I got my chance, because there were some hanging around my yard and forest behind my yard.

"The rich, whistling song of the Baltimore Oriole, echoing from treetops near homes and parks, is a sweet herald of spring in eastern North America. Look way up to find these singers: the male’s brilliant orange plumage blazes from high branches like a torch. Nearby, you might spot the female weaving her remarkable hanging nest from slender fibers. Fond of fruit and nectar as well as insects, Baltimore Orioles are easily lured to backyard feeders." - allaboutbirds.org
