It can't be denied, Braveheart is a very well-made and effective movie. Play that on TV a few times in the run up to any future Scottish independence referendum, and there'll be a free Scotland before you can say "Hung, drawn and quartered".

Here lies our land: every airt
Beneath swift clouds, glad glints of sun,
Belonging to none but itself…

709 years ago today. Robert the Bruce decisively won the Battle of Bannockburn on 23/24 June 1314, cementing his grip on Scotland and, arguably, deferring the Union of the Crowns of Scotland and England by nearly three centuries. When we visited #Scotland, we took a bus from #Bannockburn to #Stirling, and two teenage girls were sitting right behind us. Literally the only word we could understand was "fock." 😂

#Sudbury in 1086 owed rent of 100 #eels to Henry de Ferrers.
#Chesterton near #Cambridge c.1250 owed 1,000 eels to its vicarage.
#Lakenheath in 1020 owed 4,000 eels to the Abbey at #BuryStEdmunds. In 1315 it instead owed 4,300 eels to the #EarlOfGloucester - but the last earl had just died at the Battle of #Bannockburn. His widow claimed to be pregnant with an heir - so probably took delivery of the eels?

The Scots relishing the outcome of the single combat rushed the English forces and focred them back over the narrow Bannock burn crossing.
However, the difficult terrain (boggy) made it difficult for either side to gain advantage and the battle continued to a second day.
Overnight, the English forces re-crossed the burn, but in the morning were forced back by the Scottish schiltrons.
