The UK cigarette advertising when we recognised the risk they posed, so why don't we do the same for SUVs?

Children are 8 times more likely, and adults >twice as likely to be killed when hit by an SUV compared to a standard car.

Rising sales of SUVs have also helped to cancel out any carbon emissions saved by electric cars.

Our roads are unsafe. We need to stop advertising these vehicles as a lifestyle choice.

If you drive a huge 3L diesel SUV (or any other similarly oversized, overweight vehicle), you're neither environmentally conscious nor socially responsible.

Also, there's no way that's parked 10 metres from the junction. So, he's a careless and inconsiderate driver too.

On SUVs:

From a technical+physical standpoint, SUVs are pretty much the worst body shape possible. There is a reason why historically only true offroaders used this type of body shape, it simple sucks at anything else:

- High ground clearance makes it much more likely to run over people instead of pushing them away. It also raises the center of gravity, making the car more prone to rollover and reduces max turn speed.

- Long raised hoods make it much more likely to overlook children+pedestrians and even worse, crash into them much higher on their body which increases the changes of fatal injuries significantly.

- Heavy weight +poor aerodynamics increase fuel consumption significantly.
