Expectations are otherwise tempered because I know that even with some firmware updates it's really a Baofeng at heart

Any strong signal somewhere will deafen it. AM is fake. Yes, you can flush any firmware, etc., but the radio is even worse than a #Baofeng #uv5r . Fortunately I just invested 15€ on it.

messing with #Baofeng radios today. I've had good luck with the two on the ends, the one in the center has some sort of squelch issue that's evoked after being flashed with Chirp.

a bit of research indicates this is potentially a (somewhat) known issue with the UV-9R Pro when it is flashed with Chirp. fixing it involves messing with firmware.
not great, but it's not my unit at least.

So, my (and friends') #Baofeng units can now access WX, MURS, FRS, GMRS, some common business channels, and marine VHF; plus a few custom channels with TSQ enabled for "privacy" on MURS, FRS, and GMRS.
I'm not a radio nerd and haven't tested nearly enough so there are def mistakes and non useful channels, but this is nonetheless the product of 2.5 years of research & testing.

I was able to make a QSO. Unfortunately I wasn't recording the contact and I didn't note down the op's call, but still. Wow!
Never have tried anything with satellites before and was rather intimidated by it, but it just sort of worked.

Picked up a $30.00 Anysecu UV-K5 it arrived from China a whole 5 or 6 days ahead of time.....
And it's both better, and worse then I thought it would be.
With some interesting features, like NOAA channels, and airband - And only a few dollars more then a UV-5R - this could be the new beginner radio to give to new hams. #baofeng #UV5R #UVK5 #Anysecu #hamradio #ham #radio
