Sign of a vanished cultural synthesis in Central Europe. Always reminds me of the great 1966 essay by Gershom Scholem:
"To Germans of a later day, Jewish enthusiasm for Schiller seemed merely comic or touching. Only rarely was there a German who was stirred by the idea that here, for once, there could have been much common ground"
