On this #day 110 years ago; 23rd May 1913; the #British built three mast iron #sailing #barque, the SV #Cromdale, ran aground off the #Lizard Point (the most southerly point of British mainland) in thick #fog. The #ship was on a #voyage from #Taltal, #Chile to #Fowey, #Cornwall with a cargo of #nitrates. There were no casualties but within a week the #ship had been broken up completely by the sea.

In the eighty years between 1788 and 1868, some 162,000 #convicts were embarked on #transport #ships and #banished to the #colonies to serve their sentences. The 337-ton #barque #Neva sailed from the #Irish port of #Cork on 8th January 1835 bound for #Sydney with 153 #female #prisoners of the crown. Joining them were 55 #children. When the Neva struck a #reef in Bass Strait, some 150 #souls #perished.

Georges Braque, Large Nude 1908
Braque's Large Nude was quite a departure from the usual artistic styles and depiction of women. Without using clear lines, Braque had formed his female nude from geometric shapes and used colour to create the illusion of volume, lines, mass and weight.

In this painting we can see Braque managed to combine Picasso's Africanism and Cezanne's approach to color and shape.

Georges Braque, Little Harbor in Normandy, 1909
Picasso and Braque worked in creative dialogue, breaking down and reformulating the representation of objects and their structure. This painting is the first fully realized example of Braque’s early Cubist style. He described the English Channel coast in severe geometries and a sober palette. His compressed treatment of space and use of a shifting perspective seems to propel the two sailboats forward.
