The style of box shown in this picture replaced the original ones in the 1930s and unlike other parts of the UK, Glasgow police boxes were traditionally painted red rather than blue.

Police box beside Barrowland Park on the east end of Glasgow. Invented by Charles Eggar, a Glasgow fireman, police boxes first appeared on the city's streets in 1891.

The original signal boxes were hexagonal and made of cast iron by the Macfarlane and Co Saracen foundry. A similarilty in design strongly suggests it was based on a men's urinal already produced it that company.

I noticed this decoration on an old tenement opposite the Barrowlands Park in Glasgow. It took me a few minutes to realise that the usual leaf garland motif above the windows morphed into a strange face at the end.

The Barrowlands Park Album Pathway, Glasgow.

Created by Artist Jim Lambie in 1984 to celebrate the role that the Barrowlands Ballroom has played in Glasgow's musical history, each 'album' on the path is dedicated to a gig by a specific act at the Barrowlands, ranging from Bob Dylan to Primal Scream, and including many iconic home-grown bands such as Simple Minds.
