#BarryHumphries (aka #DameEdnaEverage, #SirLesPatterson, and #SandyStone) passed away this weekend at the age of 89, from "complications following hip surgery." He was surrounded by his family & friends. He is survived by his wife, four children, & several grandchildren.

Humphries was born in Kew (Melbourne), Australia in 1934, but spent much of his life in London, where his alter ego #DameEdna hobnobbed with royalty & celebrities.

Being funny does not give one a free pass to be a transphobe.

Barry Humphries could have educated himself and moved with the times, but even when he was given multiple opportunities to demonstrate thoughtfulness and growth he doubled-down.

There's an obituary in ArtsHub written by Richard Watts. I've quoted the opening paragraphs below. But I feel I cannot link to the article because the rest of it verges on hagiography.

Barry Humphries, the Australian satirist and comedian whose skewering of middle class values made him a global star, has died aged 89.

Best known for characters such as the waspish Dame Edna Everage, boozy vulgarian Sir Les Patterson and the melancholic pensioner Sandy Stone, Humphries’ reputation became tarnished in recent years, thanks in part to his increasing conservatism and his notorious description of gender reassignment surgery as ‘self-mutilation’.

He doubled down on his comments in a subsequent interview with The Spectator, calling ‘transgenderism’ a ‘fashion’ and saying: ‘And it’s pretty evil when it’s preached to children by crazy teachers.’

The controversy saw the Melbourne International Comedy Festival rename its Barry Award for best show as the Melbourne International Comedy Festival Award for Most Outstanding Show.

I’m really struggling with all the media coverage currently soft pedalling #BarryHumphries blatant transphobia. He very openly spoke of people like me with contempt, called bodies like mine “self mutilation” and very clearly did not view me as a human being worthy of a dignified life. Why am I expected to care one bit about his “hurt feelings” when MICF dropped his name from an award? Dead though he may be, I see no reason to humour his bigotry
