Interesting #review: A #Cultural #History of the #Soul: Europe and North America from 1870 to the Present, by Kocku von #Stuckrad:
"In the last two chapters, Stuckrad [returns] to North America, towards #naturewriting and #nature writers who would contribute significantly to inspiring the North American #environmental movement. His closing arguments explore the critical works of influential environmental authors like #RachelCarson and #BarryLopez."

Author Robert Macfarlane recently wrote this essay about author Barry Lopez, his life, work and legacy including the idea of “geography as generosity”.
“Reflections on the life and work of one of environmentalism's most prolific writers”

Barry Lopez on the necessity of artistic engagement at every level of human being, from the private to the public and politic.
I just read Arctic Dreams, by #BarryLopez. He was an amazing intellect, he obviously read and lived more about the #arctic, #biology than many people could, in a lifetime, and was extremely intelligent, poetic, and about to communicate without ego. I really enjoyed reading this #book. I was inspired to read it, after I heard this interview on #FreshAir:

@bookstodon I'll reply with a few, random quotes.

Good mail day. Never before published long interview with Barry Lopez by Julia Martin (Trinity University Press).

“To be patient, to pay attention to the world that is not yourself, is the first step in the neophyte’s discovery of the larger world outside the self, the landscape in which wisdom itself abides. Other residents of the world… know more than we do about how to survive whatever is coming. Their investment is not in progress but in stability.”
— Barry Lopez, retelling a teaching of Koyukon elder Lavine Williams

“[…]I’ve got to think that the story, storytelling, came about in part because it served the desire that people had to clarify what it is that they were feeling or imagining. […]They would pause & look, sweep a hand across the play of light in a tree that was upwelling in a storm, and say, “Well, I . . . that’s how I feel now.”

@Anthro I figure if I didn’t exceed the character length allowed for alt text by the Metatext app, then my alt text length is ok. Wordy is ok for word-loving audiences. I know if I were blind I wouldn’t get anything from “a wooden bridge crosses a creek in a rainforest.” I’d need a story to understand a pic I can’t see. We’re telling stories, here. Like #BarryLopez said “Sometimes a person needs a story more than food to stay alive.”
"What I want to know, what I look for as a writer, is what good was a person capable of, how did love flourish around him or her? How did what they do help?"
— Barry Lopez

“Once, I can easily imagine, we each had a fundamental sense of well-being that grew directly out of our intimacy, our back-and-forth, with the profundity embedded in the places we occupied.”

In the midst of #reading #BarryLopez's Embrace Fearlessly the Burning World. He's one of my favorite authors and I my heart aches to think he is no longer with us. His understanding of the natural world, the impact of #colonialism upon the #earth and #indigenous cultures, his humility and growth mindset - I find his work inspiring and wish he was here to write us through more of what ails us in this era. I read the title #essay twice with tears in my eyes - a heartfelt call to all of us.

Two years since #BarryLopez died. One of the most extraordinary human beings, thinkers, writers, explorers, visionaries. As was his life, his literary legacy is crucial and catalytic. I join the multitudes of others grateful to have encountered his work, and forever changed because of it.
