I also want to say that THIS SATURDAY will mark the 50th anniversary of the passing of #RobertoClemente - his plane crashed while trying 2 get supplies to earthquake victims in Nicaragua - on Dec. 31, 1972.

I hope u all will take a moment 2 acknowledge #THEGREATONE as I do each yr (my mom grew up watching him in Pittsburgh so its tradition)! He was a GREAT human both on & off the field!

To add to @DocTellMeMore 's post below listing his on-field accomplishments (of which there could've been more! His final hit on 9/30/72 was his 3000th) I'd like to add he was/is the greatest #humanitarian in MLB history (maybe one of the greatest in world history, imho). He was the 1st Latin player in the HOF & his number should be universally retired alongside 42. I hate Manfred for a billion reasons (so much he makes me miss Bud! The 1980 Philadelphia Phillies were the last of the 'Original Sixteen' (1903) franchises to win a World Series. The Orioles, who started as the St Louis Browns, were the next to last in 1966. The 1980 Phillies were also the 1st team in the divisional era to win the WS w the worst record amongst playoff teams.

The Phillies best hitter was Mike Schmidt, who hit 48 HR and put up 8.9 bWAR. Steve Carlton was their best pitcher going 24-9, 2.34 ERA w 10.2 bWAR.

The only other qualified closer who came close to those numbers was Andres Munoz, but I think it's safe to say that Diaz was the best closer this year, and probably one of the best we've ever seen. Just wow.
