I had a go with that power system data. What keeps puzzling me are the hours of negative power price. In past few days, price is negative 40$/MWh for about 4 hours daily (11am to 3pm). Gas is shut down, but coal never goes below 2GW.

Is this a technical constraint of the coal power plants, or do some plants have contractual obligation to deliver, like fixed-price PPA?

One thing is for sure: Coal fire power production is reducing over time, as more wind, solar and storage comes online. Only wind & solar are on a massive installation spike.

Gas power is the most interesting fossil fuel because it can be switched on and off quickly. Coal needs to stay warmed up just in cases. That’s where “#baseload power” comes from.
