First batch this morning was tomatoes with . Unfortunately lost one of the big ones to thermal shock (shattered when it went in). Hazard of re-using jars.

Overdue combo and update (no pics don't worrry totally not even bad language except "weed") Peppers are next.

The are no more. I've put off writing but.. they graduated to weed! 😹 They got some last minute training last week, and soon they go to flower. Nothing much to say, pics later, etc. I need a better dehumidifier but as long as the heat holds, the exhaust fan + house AC keeps up.

The is growing tons of female flowers! 5 or 6 popped up literally as I was making a Hard Choice about a rebuild. Unfortunately, zero males survive. I think I got a couple pollinated but it is just comical at this point.
Not comical is the which gets more vigorous every time I harvest. (Every few days I have to cut the stem back because it is leaning on the LED again and turning yellow.) It is just HAPPY. Cut down all the front-facing leaves? Enough for homemade XL margarita pizza today and tomorrow there is enough new growth for a nice sauce.

I had a visitor last night. Something that only eats . Two plants stripped bare; one reduced to a stump; two severely damaged; and untouched.

It could have been a rabbit, but I suspect a deer.

My small garden is poorly defended. It hasn't been a serious problem until now. Sometimes a bird will eat a small , or a squirrel will steal then discard a green tomato, but the loss was minimal. Now it's serious.

Sometimes, what I want is: simple.

I had boiled 350gr of rice with a few aromatics*, to make . The balls, wrapped tight individually in cellophane, are getting used to their new balls-upped status in the fridge - and so I decided I could think of nothing I wanted more to break my fast with than a bit of the and some .

Reader, it was perfect.

*fresh ginger and garlic, mixed with salt, sugar & sesame oil, blitzed and then sautéed for two minutes.

@gardening the last of the half-wins:
. Basil is, like, *the easiest herb* to grow. I’ve grown basil in apartments! But not in nice concrete planters, not this year, oh no. Took me three different sowings to get two knee-high plants.
. Most important lesson learned: I *love* filet green beans. I could plant ten times as many as I did this year. Lots of frustrating failures too, though.
Slugs love beans. Don’t plant the beans too near the slugheims.
My bush dry beans are pretty puny. One full bed of them is struggling along at less than knee high. Another bed, home to many failures, ended up with a thriving tomato and two clumps of thriving bush beans. We’ll see if they make.
All of the pole beans were whimsical late May plantings, grown in unimproved soil near the garden fences. I LOVE FILET BEANS. I’ve been eating them raw. Peas are my spring salad, beans are my summer salad.
were a real mixed bag. I lost most of my transplants to the cold. Both sowings, a month apart, hardened off - but the highs didn’t get above 60 until some time in May.
The two peppers that lived were the ones nearest the south wall of the house. One is in a concrete planter, proving that it’s not the soil that’s the problem with them. The other is in a fabric grow bag, in a plastic bin, tucked up beside the house. It’s the warmest sunny spot in the entire property, and that pepper grew huge and set like fifty fruit so far. It’s also concealing one of the wasp nests, and they don’t appreciate me bungling around too much, so I’m not counting.
Both of the peppers are “bridge to Paris” sweet peppers. They’re nice. I wish some of the hot peppers had lived! No complaints about the variety, I just wish I’d had others too.

How to Grow Your Own Food – With or Without a Garden

There’s no such thing as an effortless crop, but plenty that are pretty foolproof – even if you have just a windowsill or room for a few pots.

by Alys Fowler

"If you only have a windowsill

"The Lilliputian world of offers those with the smallest of spaces the opportunity to grow some crops with flavour as well as vitamins and other nutrients. Microgreens are merely seedlings harvested when they are no more than 10cm or so high and grown so close together that they resemble a small forest. You don’t need proper pots or a seed tray: a yoghurt tub or a takeaway container will do, as long as you punch holes for drainage. Microgreens are a one-hit wonder, however – each cut is the end of life for the seedling – so you will need to re-sow every two weeks or so. When buying seeds, check the packages and hunt for those with the most inside.

"The entry level into this world, which is vast and runs from amaranth to watercress, is dried from the supermarket. Sow them cheek by jowl and cover with just a little compost. The flavour of just-harvested pea shoots is fresh and green, just as if you have been frolicking in a summer meadow. Once you have succeeded here, try the seedlings of , , , , , , (shiso) … The list is endless – even carrot seedlings are delicious.

"If you have a bit more space and a sunny enough spot, I would recommend getting a tree or perhaps a . Not because you are likely to harvest bowls full of fruit, but for the leaves, which harbour all the flavour of the rind, but in a subtle and interesting way. They can be used in curries, puddings or – my favourite – gin and tonic. You could even add some coriander microgreens and truly up your game. Citrus trees need bright, warm conditions and watering twice a week in summer."

When your plans change due to a sick friend you find yourself “inventing” (I’m sure the Italians did this way before me… 😏) a new pasta sauce using Romano Peppers, sun-dried tomatoes & fresh basil 🌿 in a fresh tomato sauce

This one is truly a keeper, as it’s so delicious, I practically licked the bowl 😋

I want you all to know I planted some in two pots and it's been waging war with the other plants ever since. Every day I look at it it's somehow bigger. Only winter can stop it now.
