Native American art "is considered the best basket-making culture in the world, & she was the best in it.” Arguably, Louisa Keyser’s baskets were made possible not only by her talent & efforts, but by the support of white patrons. https://www.nytimes.com/2023/09/05/arts/design/washoe-baskets-louisa-keyser-native-americans.html

Trying my hand at a twined basket. I trimmed our red osier dogwood and the twigs were still really flexible so I decided to put them to work. It's turning out pretty okay for my first one like this and second basket ever!
I finished my first basket the other day! I think for a first attempt it's pretty good and super cute. It's all stuff from our yard/kitchen:
-English ivy
-corn husk
-daylily
-red osier dogwood
Wholesome holiday content: my aunt-in-law we were staying with is an artist and I had my first lesson in #basket weaving. Beautiful spot to sit and learn and chat! Basket is junkus & lomandra #basketry #fibrearts #handmade

can any #basketry people tell me how i’m supposed to finish off the rim of the basket?? 😅
i’m always pleased when i try using a plant for some purpose i haven’t previously heard of it working for, and it works. this little pouch i just wove is mostly made of japanese knotweed (highly invasive in NA), and it was so pleasing to work with!
No-tools basketry progress. This base is pretty much done, next step is to put the sides on it. Eventually it'll be a cylindrical basket I can put my lunch in.

Zelda totk kept me from crafting during the last week. Today I found the courage to try a tiny basket with dried daffodil (spokes) and dandelion stems (weavers). I learned a lot, especially that I need more patience when rehydrating the daffodils - a few of them broke. For a first attempt I am definitely happy with the result!

Progress on the #basket I'm making on public transport. This is the base, and once I'm sure it's large enough to fit a sandwich, I'll start adding sides at right angles to it.
This piece is a little special because I'm doing it entirely without tools (except for the little bamboo fibre holder you can see). The ends of my dried yucca leaves are tough enough to act as their own needless.
Yucca wraps, with yucca and palm fill.

I took an introductory basket weaving class this weekend! I LOVED the process and already want to make more! It’s been a long time since I picked up a new medium, and simply getting this little break from making digital art was way more refreshing than I’d expected. I need to make sure I step away from the computer and printer more often
@priscillaharing thank you 🙏🏼 for all this - so many good things in here. Agree on everything. Yes, #skills! Growing, sailing both brilliant. Also really keen to learn more crafts, or maybe just one, really well. Like #basketry. Here is a grass bowl i made myself in a one day course last year. Really want to do more of all this
@NatureMC Thank you so much, this is fascinating! & the 3 videos so informative. The #cowhorn ring template is a nifty tool.
I started wondering about honey extraction, & was delighted to read of a #beekeeper achieving good yields this way in UK, with healthy #bees & delicious #mead:

& also teaching #skep making skills:

Thanks for ideas & inspiration!

I found this out by the dog run this morning. We've had lots of wind, so it probably blew there. This is a devil's claw. It has little sharp barbs at the end of the long arms. The fruit from this plant can be eaten. It is kind of like okra. Indigeneous peoples use its fiber for basket making. It is a long process to prepare, but makes a fortress of a basket. (Tohono O'odham basket - the black is the devils claw) More on devil's claw at: https://nativeseeds.org/pages/tohono-oodham-domesticated-devils-claw

And I've decided it's going to be... a lid for my other basket!
I'll need to put a small handle on it so it's easier to remove, but it presses into my existing basket and holds in place nicely!

#Basketry progress. Big enough to be a coaster. #NeolithicTech #basket

Have started another #basket. To try and ensure it doesn't get added to my pile of unfinished #NeolithicTech #basketry projects, I've the following rules for myself:
- Doesn't have to be good
- Doesn't need to use any materials which are annoying to use or transport
- Ribbon wrap is nice, but eh, whatever
- Can just end up as a coaster. I need more coasters.
Basket is yucca wrap with mixed (mostly yucca and palm) core.

@atriverside i absolutely LOVE this article. Thank you so much for sharing it. This kind of #HistoricalEcology is just so wonderful - so important to really see, understand and hopefully revive all those cultural landscapes around us, #Coppicing, #Basketry #Wetlands and all
