Some dogs play by running around together, with one chasing the other.
Basset Hounds play by wrestling. And they use their mouths.
This scene between mother and son looks quite violent, but it wasn't. Pippin generally plays the underdog, and his mother, Panda, will often put her mouth around his throat in a mock attack on the jugular.
Again, no harm was done, and Pippin, who is nearly five years younger, usually wears Panda out during these wrestling matches.

It was 15 years ago today that Dermot, my beloved Basset Hound, was born. This is a photo of Dermot on his 7th birthday back in 2015.
Dermot passed away in 2021. He was quite an amazing companion, and rather accomplished in all sorts of canine activities, from the show ring to therapy work. While I have other Basset Hounds in the house, I still miss him every day.

I took Panda (seen here this morning on the sofa) and Pippin to an obedience trial yesterday, and both were entered in Rally obedience: Panda in Excellent, Pippin in Intermediate. Neither qualified (which didn't surprise me).
A friend at the trial said, after Panda spent her time in the ring sniffing and actively ignoring me, 'We love watching you and your Basset Hounds in the ring. They make the rest of us look good!' 😄
