The bass is a wonderful instrument. It has a great range from harmonics to the low B on a 5 string. Try playing a harmonic and it rings play some low notes.

Jaco Pastorious described frets on his bass as 'speed bumps ', so he removed them and filled in the gaps with wood. He painted the fretboard with yacht varnish.

Sometimes I drift into alternative time signatures, such as 7/8. That missing quaver gives the music a hop that I like a lot.

Since being signed off work in December I have been trying to prioritise activities that have a positive impact on my mental wellbeing.

Part of that is music. So I've been giving my guitar and bass some TLC. Last week the top nut broke, so it was time to upgrade it to a shiny brass one, fret polish and new strings.
