I had a eureka moment this evening while repairing a household electronic device. Some of the screws I assumed were all the same went into a certain set of holes trivially easy, others barely got started. These are all your standard coarse thread into plastic case. I thought “there must be different sizes I can’t make out by eye.” Had my calipers from measuring a part that broke, so did some measurements. Turns out 4 of 12 had an outer diameter of 3.98mm, the rest were 4.04. #bastardEngineering
