Not only did I get to watch the world's best runners compete in the World Cross Country Championships at Bathurst this weekend, but I was also fortunate enough to take part in the World Masters XC championship, wearing an Australian uniform for the first time in my life. I was a long way from where I wanted to be in terms of fitness, but it was still a great experience racing against some of the best "older" athletes in the world on home turf. In 2016, Matt made his last non-Porsche start so far; having not yet risen beyond national competition in Porsche's ranks, he accepted a drive with privateer Tony Walls in his Objective McLaren. Campbell wasn't even the star on this car in the end - Bathurst local Brad Shiels was speedy all weekend - but got eliminated early in the race when car owner Andrew McPherson spun hard into the Forrest Elbow wall, also delaying the #66 Mobil1 Porsche (another car deserving of a feature).

Matt Campbell's more well known as a Porsche factory driver, but he started his #Bathurst journey in this Abarth. It came last in his class, racing just ten laps but still being classified, alongside Formula Ford racer Luke Ellery (no relation to Steven) and Improved Production driver Matt Cherry.

Unrelatedly, the class winner was another Abarth with future Bathurst 1000 winner Luke Youlden aboard.

Some very unique trivia about the #Bathurst 12 Hour: Mount Panorama Circuit is the only circuit with a #Kangaroo flag procedure in case of kangaroos on track. This has happened multiple times during the #B12hr and the #Bathurst1000 and drivers are made aware of the procedures during the drivers briefing before the races.
