All change with incoming warm weather; Daubenton’s absent, Natterer’s numbers well down. One Brown Long Eared back in their usual spot.

are natural hosts for that cause higher case fatality rates in humans than do derived from any other source. @caraebrook @bootslab &co build a nested within-host, population-level model to explain this phenomenon plos.io/44Dri3y

Transition citizens scientists have found one of Britain’s rarest bats, the Barbastrelle. 🦇

Transition Woodbridge has been helping their community to monitor local bats, putting up 190 detectors in gardens, care home grounds and at the National Trust’s Sutton Hoo. University of Suffolk researchers are using the audio recordings gathered to learn about the health of local eco-systems and how to protect bats' roosts.

Jane Healey (pictured in action) from the group said: "It's nice for people to feel they are contributing to the national or international picture, even though it seems like 'just my garden'.

"I have all sorts of conversations about it. Having had the Covid pandemic there's still a wish to be a community, so it's real 'citizen science'.”

The rare bat was one of 10 bat species found, and it’s helping to generate more interest locally on how to protect roosts, insect populations and the habitats bats rely on.

A cool thing about this time of year is watching the hunting all of the bugs congregating under the street lights.

I’d idly wondered if there were around - I’d assumed there were, but couldn’t remember ever actually seeing any.

Except now - just saw several of them flitting around the water tower in - quite big chunky efforts too. So I spent ten minutes or so watching ‘em - to a few quizzical looks from the occasional human passer-by…

Earlier this year I was so stoked to find bats flying around in my neighborhood at twilight and even right out my front yard. And then recently I found this cheap bat detector kit and I’m doubly stoked. It’s ultrasonic!
It took me several nights to get the frequency dialed in and tonight I finally got a good lock, and I’m even more stoked that I managed to capture it in a halfway decent video! 🦇

Ever wanted to summon a colony of bats to do your bidding? Or just have them hang out because they're so cool and majestic little sky puppies? Just me? That's cool.
