Car manufacturer Stellantis opened a €40M EV battery tech centre in Italy.

The Mirafiori Battery Technology Centre is 8,000 square metres in total, which makes it the largest battery testing facility in Italy, and one of the largest in Europe.

The move is part of a plan to expand battery building capacity to 400GWh — and significantly reduce battery weight.

It has been so long since the popularization of #EV’s that the first pioneering pieces will massively need to replace the cells due to their wear. Normally (e.g. on buses) it is assumed that a cell with 80% of its rated capacity is already worn out and it is recommended to replace it. But it’s still a good energy storage for other applications!

In the models with only short-duration lithium-ion batteries available, over 60 GW of battery capacity is built by 2040 to shift renewable generation and meet peak demand. However, this capacity only provides 538 GWh of energy storage.

With the prices of #Solar and #Batteries there's very little reason to look for ones energy production from anywhere else nowadays even in far northern latitudes, but I am glad to see advancements in geothermal that may help bring down the cost for that baseline production technology though too.

This is the graph that spurred me to post my thoughts on Chinese industrial policy implementation "plans".

This is, imo, absolutely terrible domestic policy and implementation, but if they overbuild like this on #batteries than we'll be able to zero out our fossil fuel burning for electricity and transportation sooner than most estimates suggest.

That's a LOT of battery capacity to store renewable energy! I sure hope we can still build and operate factories here for security reasons.

My non-scientific anecdotal observation is that #web #apps on #Safari (on #iphone and #Mac) also use up A LOT of #energy, draining my #batteries faster.
