Anyway, if you like a bit of homegrown teen drama paired with a bit of suspense? Give it a shot. 8 episodes. iPlayer or Netflix. Like I say, I quite enjoyed it.

The series was produced by the same team responsible for Netflix’ Sex Education. Which, in many ways, has a somewhat similar 90s aesthetic/vibe despite also being set in the present day. It’s a vibe which agrees with me, certainly. But then that was an important era to me. It’s strangely familiar even when not entirely comfortable. 7/8

And it’s just a really odd pairing of a plot hinged so heavily on social networks, video feeds and data transfers, with the music and aesthetic of two decades earlier. A period when most of a Britain was not yet online. A major plot point actively relies on using old school analogue mobile phones to avoid the reach of this app. I quite enjoyed it. It’s just that these two things sit really oddly together in places. 6/8

And I would know. I was finishing up my own exams in the late 90s. I got underage drunk and danced abysmally to this self-same music. But at that point I didn’t even own a mobile phone, let alone a smartphone (tech which was barely even beyond the concept stage back then). 5/8

It’s a teen drama, set in the present. But at times you get the feeling the writers may not have not actually *met* a teenager from the present. It’s plot may rely on the technology of now? But its soundtrack is entirely pulled from the late 90s. Its teens dress and behave as if they were *from* the late 90s. Their houses are decorated at every turn as if this *was* the late 90s. 4/8

Sure it has some very creepy elements. But all of which are effectively explained away by the end of the series. There’s ultimately nothing truly supernatural in play here, though the series tries to point that way in places. There’s even an incongruous flashback to some of the main cast’s parents using a ouija board. Which connects seemingly to nothing at all. 3/8

It’s set in the present. Bolton and Manchester. It relies upon smartphones. And teenage angst. On the age of surveillance and the dark web. And a bit more teenage angst. It’s centrally about a malicious App, and how it is used by others to manipulate the lives of a group of teens. Resulting in stalking, blackmail, harassment and death.

In a couple of sittings I’ve been watching through Red Rose, a BBC3 drama from autumn last year, now also streaming on Netflix. I guess you’d pitch it as suspense. They kind of billed as horror. But it’s not *really* a strong fit for that genre. Well executed. Good cast. I thought it was broadly quite good. But one thing in particular struck me…

Currently listening to https://www.bbc.co.uk/sounds/play/m001g9pf?partner=uk.co.bbc&origin=share-mobile. Just trying to keep a calm quiet Christmas spirit. Its not really about belief, more contemplation and a love of music. #Carols #BBC3 #Christmas
