I remember how, back when I were a lad and followed football, the BBC News programme avoided spoiling MOTD. The newsreader would say something like "to avoid the results look away now". Then the results would be put on screen, in silence, for long enough to read.

Tonight I just heard "…look away now. (Pause.) Arsenal won 3-1…". What's the point of that? Ritual words passed down from the elders, their meaning lost to the ages?
