Runnicles held the audience in what felt like minutes of silence, before lowering his baton and allowing us to applaud. The silence after music is important; it keeps the spell.

They played the programme in Glasgow on last week live on Radio 3, which means you can hear more or less the same performance. Though without my influence or applause.

I saw BBCSSO play Mahler 9 this afternoon, conducted by Donald Runnicles.

It was sublime. Just wonderful. I can't tell how much was down to Mahler, Runnicles, or the musicians in the large orchestra, but between them they made a glorious sound.
