1885, Johnny Kit Elswa, a Haida man from Tanu, British Columbia, Canada. Among likely many other occupations, he was an artist and translator. Note the tattoos on his chest and arm. Via National Anthropological Archives, Smithsonian Institution.

Circa mid/late 1950s Northland Navigation travel poster for their Alaska and British Columbia Cruises. Northland Navigation was in operation 1944-1976.

Tensions between islanders and mainlanders were high at the time, so...The governor decided to put off making an announcement to allow "the inhabitants of both the rival cities to eat their Christmas dinner in peace without letting them even know that" Victoria had already been chosen and approved by the Colonial Office in London.

Thinking more about the transimperial context of Dickens's A Christmas Carol and British Columbia connections - I promised more xmas content from colonial BC. So here are a few festive finds from the archive.
