My believing neighbour keeps going on about Direct Energy Weapons and “Jewish Space Lasers” as part of a larger climate change conspiracy…

And immediately my mind goes to this scene from Austin Powers.

I need help 🤣

Today on my way home I was stuck in the line on due to the reconstruction after the June fire. While I was waiting I saw a familiar Volunteer Fire Department truck and tender drive past going East. This was just minutes after hearing that the Provincial State of Emergency had been called due to the fires in the Interior. I know the chief of that department. We went to high school together. So I texted him and wished him and his crews good luck as I figured they were on their way to the ferry and the mainland to help. He texted back and confirmed. I hope he and all the first responders called in to help are OK.

Here is a map of Kelowna and West Kelowna showing the location of the fires (bcwildfire.ca). You can see the populated areas near the lake. The main fire is on the left/west side of the lake. The red points are where fires started. You can see the 2 new fires that jumped 3km over the lake overnight. There is a third just a little further north. The red areas are mandatory evacuations, yellow is alert. The main cities are not yet under alert thankfully, but the possibility remains. The Airport is closed indefinitely.

The fire outside Kelowna jumped the lake last night and now both the Cities of West Kelowna (pop. 35,000 - west side of the lake) and Kelowna (pop. 142,000 - east side) have neighbourhoods under evac orders.

20 years ago this week, August 2003, massive fires lead to the evacuation of 26,000 people in Kelowna. Below are quotes from two CBC articles from the time.

“The evacuation of 26,000 people 9,000 households from their homes in the Okanagan city over three days is the largest of its kind in Canada, city councillor Robert Hobson says.”

“Journalists and officials who toured the burnt-out areas of Kelowna, B.C., on Saturday were stunned by the effects of the fire that swept through parts of the city.”

"At least 203 houses were destroyed, and that total could rise as officials surveyed the damage, said Fire Chief Gerry Zimmerman.”

cbc.ca/news/canada/devastation

“After touring the damage Sunday, Prime Minister Jean Chrtien said the federal government would provide money to help rebuild the region, but didn't discuss how much.”

"Firefighters are also battling three major fires around Kamloops, the largest of which is the 260-square kilometre McLure fire north of the city.”

At that time the link between Climate Change and the fires was less well accepted (to say the least) outside the scientific community.

20 years, 3 Canadian Prime Ministers, 3 BC Premiers, and multiple terrible fire seasons later, and Canadian fossil fuel emissions continue to rise, new gigantic oil and gas projects continue to be built, and millions of people are impacted every day from smoke and fire. Some, like the town of Lytton BC, have been lost completely, possibly forever.

What, exactly, will it take, to End Fossil Fuel use??
