Our irises - originally gifted from our neighbor’s clumps some years ago - are blooming spectacularly thanks to the winter rains. These are the first three to fully open.

Sumter now maintains the Swan Lake Iris #Gardens as a public attraction and beautiful #botanical #garden and a peaceful place.

#SwanLake #Gardens was formerly the private property of a wealthy resident, but was donated to the city to maintain as a public #park.
The #flowers are amazing, such as this incredible #JapaneseIris with #white #petals with #purple veins and smaller, central petals, as well as bits of #gold in the centers of the large petals.

A white #Iris at the Swan Lake Iris Gardens in #Sumter, #SouthCarolina.
Originally the private fishing property of Hamilton Carr Bland, a wealthy citizen, Bland purchased #JapaneseIris bulbs, which failed to thrive in his manicured garden. Angry, Bland ordered his gardeners to throw the bulbs in the #marsh, which exploded in #blooms the next year. Bland expanded the property and left it to the city of Sumter, which maintains it as a park for the public.
