@pgavin Yes, I saw that! I met Sarah and Jakob at #BeaverCON 2022.

THREAD: More thoughts about Leila Phillip's book #Beaverland. I made it to chapter 13, where Phillip meets up with Scott McGill at Long Green Creek within the #Chesapeake Bay #watershed. McGill owns an #environmental restoration company called Ecotone.

He is one of the founders and sponsors of #BeaverCON and I attended many a zoom with him while serving on the planning committee for the 2022 conference.

@greenaspen Hi! An HOA is a homeowner’s association. I have been following the #Scotland #beavers. And saw a presentation on the #Wales beavers at #BeaverCON 2022.

And I wrote a couple of successful grant applications on behalf of a #watershed group to a county #stormwater management commission to install flow devices to manage #beaver conflicts nonlethally.

And my nonprofit joined the Illinois Environmental Council.

And I commented on the draft #Illinois Water Plan.

And I created a 12-page brochure about #beavers specific to Illinois issues.

And I served on the planning committee for #BeaverCON 2022.

She and I worked on the planning committee together, and she is a font of information about curricula for teaching kids about #beavers.

I first heard about Bob Boucher when I called Heidi Perryman of Worth a Dam asking for help saving my local #beavers. Heidi literally knows everyone and everything associated with the beaver world and knew that Milwaukee and Chicago are neighbors. Then I was invited to a zoom presentation Bob was giving a Lake County watershed group about his study. And of course I met him at #BeaverCON 2022, of which the Superior Bio-Conservancy was a sponsor.

@hydropsyche @douglasvb Going to #Beavercon 2022 was a little surreal as well--first event I had attended since the pandemic began. And I had to fly straight from Baltimore to Vermont for my niece's bat mitzvah, so I had two suitcases--one full of flannel and beaver t-shirts, and one with synagogue clothing!

#Beaver advocate Mike Callahan founded the nonprofit Beaver Institute: https://www.beaverinstitute.org. In addition to co-founding #BeaverCON, Mike offers a training program for how to design and install flow devices to resolve beaver conflicts. And this year the Beaver Institute launched a series of National Beaver Working Groups on such subjects as policy, funding, communications, education, and conflict resolution. This will allow beaver advocates across the country to work together.

So the beaver believers started gathering in the 1990s at a biannual conference called State of the Beaver. Recently, there have also been California Beaver Summits, a New Mexico Beaver Summit, and #BeaverCON. I had the honor of being a part of the BeaverCON 2022 planning committee; it was held outside Baltimore, MD, in June, and many of the presentations are available on youtube.
